Hello,

Personally I was very dissatisfied with
the attempt to cure sleeplessness with drugs.
Therefore beside my beloved yoga
I bight a medical book on sleep,
which has become a branch of medicine.
Trouble with sleeping maybe due to very different reasons,
but may what it want, stress in any form
makes the problem more severe.
Now this book
"Sleeping medicine - Foundations and praxis"
(in German) (Steinberg et. al)
there is also advised to take drugs for sleeping only for a short time, but
instead to ponder about the struggle of the day,
become calm, drinking milk with honey or some tea,
very little alcohol. Alcohol reduces the deepness of the sleep
also it relaxes at first and may seem to make to sleep in easier.

Indeed the are several phases of sleep,
most prominent is the REM(rapid eye movement) sleep, which is very deep
and the more superficial NonREM.

As sleep in general is something for relaxation of the body,
the need for deep sleep is especially when the brain is functioning a lot,
as in learning situations or in a new situations - or by some brain changes
or activities from itself.
The relaxation of the physical body is mostly not so problematic, for
most people exhaust their physical body very much.
If the physical body is exhausted,
the probability to sleep increases very much.
This seems to be a more stable sleep mechanism.

So a good trick if the brain is
very active is to do some sports,
as 2 or more hours of bicycle riding.
Then the physical body will demand and produce
more deep REM sleep, so that the brain,
which profits most from the deep sleep, can also deeply relax.

It is also a way to reduce the stress neurotransmitters as
by muscular activity also they are consumed - not only in the muscles.

A further requirement is to sleep in the dark and
at best with little noises.

Of course a lot of yoga practices, asanas, make also tired and
harmonize the brain and the body.
So it is good to do it if you cannot sleep too.
Maybe a nightly bicycle riding is not so appropriate.

There are a lot of hormones and neurotransmitters produced during sleep.

As you know, the practice of staying 40 days and nights without sleep is
ascribed to Jesus, also to Buddha and seems to be
some common practice - theoretical -
in monastery or mythical practices.

Hope this is a little bit helpful

at night with drugs
it is best to take the dose
but before you sleep
you must set your alarm clock
to ring in one hour
then sleep for an hour, your head will spin
suddenly
chronos will wake you in the middle of your rotation
you will still dream, but you will not sleep
from here you will begin to see the difference
between the spinning world
and the spinning brain
(this works best with ambien narcotics)

I have been told that In ancient greek times most people did not
choose to sleep only once a day. Instead the had two sleeps, the first
begins at 8pm and lasts until 12 or 1am, from there they do work for
several hours before falling into the second sleep at around 4 or 5am.
This sounds interestesting to me but I do not know if it is true.
