Symbols, supposedly what are most free to play, are,
ironically, automatisms (laws, habits, signifiers).
Icons are affective & indexes are perceptive, while
symbols are surface concepts. 

 
Such a sentenceitself   is an automatism. If everything can be indexed on concepts, then Philosophy is the ultimate Judge, and it can tyranise the mind. we could at least play these categories around, and think symbols capable of constructing concepts, or the reversesely have concepts building syntaxes and become dry with them tyrannyes.
