We are aware that Deleuze and Guattari mention a certain Devereaux in connection
with a kind of anthroplogy. The proposed Mohave Walk fo the Veterans (summer
2011) will be aware of these parameters:
'The various ghost diseases of the Mohave are, in a genuine sense, also soul
loss diseases, which, among many North American tribes are believed to cause
insanity. Among the Mohave, the concept of soul loss appears to be applied
chiefly to depressions and anorexias, whose relationship to true depressions was
convincingly demonstrated by gero 91953). In fact, one is tempted to say that
the 'ethnic psychosis' (Devereaux 1956) of the Mohave appears to be depression
(including anorexia and suicide), which perfectly dovetails with their
cyclothymic nature (Kroeber1925, Devereauz 1939). Thisw finding proves once more
that so-called 'culture and poersonality studies' which fail to take into
account the characteristic ethnic neuroses and psychoses obtaining in a given
group are incomplete both psychologically and anthropologically.'
(Devereaux, Mohave Ethnopsychiatry and Suicide, Bureau of American Ethnology,
Bull 175, p. 184)
The Eyak shaman Kai was a fish shaman who would, from time to time, jump into
the river to 'correct' the human-fish assembglage. We note the recent debauch
(French debauche resonates well here) of the Gulf of Mexico has an anorexic
component to it. According the WHO/IARC report from 1988, there are no tetralins
in Prudhoe Bay crude oil, whereas there are tetralins in South Louisiana crude
oil.
A Russian study on the affect of one tetralin (8OH-DPAT) with mice shows that it
is a 5-HT agonist, has neuromodulatory significance, and causes a kind of
increased exploratory activity in the mice. What if the fish of the Gulf of
Mexico just decided to keep on swimming? The Mississippi Flyway is sporting a
disturbing potential: a proven vector of the H5N1 deadly strain of avian
influenza has been in the U.S. since 1870. Passer montanus is a proven vector of
H5N1 in Korea, and its hatchlings, paradoxically enough, may suffer weight loss.
This anorexia is the major rerason why it became a vector of H5N1 influenza.
Thus, some of the parameters of the 1918 pandemic originating from Brevig,
Alaska, do not apply.
The reader may note that a 5-HT agonist has the ability to mutate, as in the
alanine to valine mutation of Alzheimer's presenilin protein. Deleuze's
Asymmetrical synthesis of the Sensible may be applied at this point in synch
with asymmetrical synthesis of organic compounds.
